High flatland of Puno.- High
flatland of Puno Tableland: surrounded by the “Carabaya” mountain
range by the north and by the Occidental mountain range by the south
east, that at the same time, sub divides in:
Round the Lake
area, with altitudes that vary from 3,810 to 3,900 meters above
sea level, influenced by the thermal regulator effect of the lake,
originating a favourable climate for agriculture activity, its climate
is cold and dry with temperature excursions well marked between
day and night.
Intermediate
or High flatland area, from 3,900 to 4,200 meters above sea
level of uneven topography with abundance of natural pastures for
the breeding of bovine and ovine.
Mountain range
area, with altitudes higher than 4,200, places where the “vicuñas”,
“tarucas” and “suris” live in the wild. Ideal for the breeding of
the South American animals such as the llama and the alpaca.
The formidable
elevation of the flatland and its unique geographical condition,
originate that in the practice there are only two climatic seasons
well differentiated. The winter that absorbs the autumn and goes
from May to October, with cold nights but with shiny days and intense
luminosity. The spring that meets summer, that is the rainy season
and extends from November to April. The average temperature is 9°C,
raising to 24°C on a warm day and dropping at nights to temperatures
between 2 a 3°C.
